Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic began her first official visit to Great Britain on Tuesday by meeting with Queen Elizabeth II in Buckingham Palace.

The meeting came seven months after British Crown Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, had paid a two-day visit to Croatia as part of a regional tour. The visit of the royal couple in March did not have a political dimension but focused on promoting ties between the two nations.

After the audience with the Queen, the Croatian president is due to meet with Prime Minister Theresa May in Downing Street for talks on bilateral relations. This week May has begun talks with her EU counterparts about preparations for Britain’s exit from the European Union following a referendum in June.

Also on Tuesday, Grabar-Kitarovic is scheduled to meet separately with Defence Secretary Michael Fallon and the Speaker of the House of Lords, Norman Fowler, and to deliver a lecture at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

The British Ambassador to Croatia, Andrew Dalgleish, said before Grabar-Kitarovic’s visit that it confirms the importance that the United Kingdom attaches to its relations with Croatia. Dalgleish said that the two countries were cooperating in many areas, including defence, security, tourism, culture, education and global themes.

On Wednesday, the second and last day of the visit, the Croatian president is to meet with Business Secretary Greg Clark and have a working lunch with representatives of banks and investment institutions. In the afternoon, she will visit the Bloomberg offices where she is scheduled to meet with IT executives.
