President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatens the EU with suspension of negotiations in order to resort to a referendum.
In his speech at the presidential palace in Ankara, the Turkish President – after arguing that France, Germany and Sweden support terrorism – said: “Not only do you support terrorism, but you say the accession negotiations could be discontinued. You are late! Decide quickly! Here are the prime minister, the ministers and I as president, I say let’s be patient until the end of the year and then let’s resort to the people”.
Erdogan used the example of the United Kingdom that voted for a Brexit and said:
“What did England do? They resorted to the people. There wasn’t an emergency. The people decided to exit the EU and they left. Now us…”
The most worrying issue in the cessation of accession negotiations will be the future of the refugee agreement which Turkey signed with the EU./IBNA
