Ljubljana, October 13, 2016/Independent Balkan News Agency

The government said on Thursday it was in favour of signing the CETA free trade agreement between the EU and Canada, while adding a final decision had to come from the National Assembly.

The government adopted its stance, whose details are expected to be revealed after the end of the session, ahead of Tuesday’s meeting of EU trade ministers.

The ministers will be deciding on the signing of the trade agreement at the EU-Canada summit on 27 October, which would enable its temporary use. A nod from the European Parliament would suffice for this even before ratification in individual member states.

Slovenia has had some reservations about CETA, especially with regard to its water provisions, the ICS system for the settlement of investor-state disputes and food security standards.
