The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Alexandros N. Zenon, attended today the informal EU Foreign Affairs Council on Development, taking place in Brussels.
The agenda of the meeting included, inter alia, the correlation of migration and development, the EU-Africa partnership and the European Consensus on Development.
In his intervention, the Permanent Secretary welcomed the contents of the European Consensus on development, emphasising that the comprehensive approach outlined is in line with the multifaceted challenges we are faced with today. Regarding the EU-Africa Partnership, he expressed Cyprus’ position that Africa should remain in the focus of our development policies.
"We must invest in the establishment of the rule of law across Africa, in capacity building and job creation, whereas all aspects of our policy must be governed by values and principles", Zenon said.
On the topic of Migration and Development, Ambassador Zenon reiterated Cyprus’ support to the Central Mediterranean route action, in close cooperation with third countries. He stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of migration and that our primary concern should be the protection of the migrants’ and refugees’ human rights./IBNA
