The solution that we pursue will not leave behind winners and losers, but will take into account the sensitivities and concerns of both communities, the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades said today.
Speaking at the anti-occupation event organized by the Municipality of Morfou, the President of the Republic said, among other things, that with regard to the solution to the Cyprus problem “the Cyprus state must have one and single sovereignty, one and single international personality and one and single citizenship. The solution must nullify the occupation and its consequences, must first and foremost provide for and secure the withdrawal of Turkish occupation troops”, adding that “the solution that we pursue will not leave behind winners and losers, but will take into account the sensitivities and concerns of both communities”.
The President added that during the last few months can be observed “a positive rhetoric on the part of Ankara which we welcome. However, I wish to say that a positive rhetoric cannot lead to a solution if it is not accompanied by a tangible positive stance at the negotiating table, especially with regard to the chapters on which Turkey has a defining role to play, such as the withdrawal of the occupation troops and the security system.
We are – and I want to stress this – ready, and open to discuss the creation of a system of internal security which will respect everybody’s concerns”.
President Anastasiades also said that “it is within our plans to discuss, at last, the Territorial issue which, I must admit, is a very crucial chapter which will determine, along with that of Security and Guarantees, the success or the failure of the hopeful effort, to this day,” to solve the Cyprus problem.
Referring to the town of Morfou, which is under occupation by Turkish troops, the President said that “among the areas which must be under the Greek Cypriot constituent state, Morfou cannot but be included.”
The Cypriot President also sent out a message to the Turkish Cypriots, in which “I reassure our Turkish Cypriot compatriots that any territorial readjustments will not ignore the need to address in a satisfactory way any problems they may face. It is natural when there are territorial readjustments for movement of people to take place. Therefore, there must be a provision so that there will be sufficient and adequate place of residential units for those who will have to move out of houses of Greek Cypriots”.
“We must realize that the evolution of the unitary state is the only feasible way”, the President of the Republic concluded.
