Unacceptable remarks like those of the President of Turkey about Cyprus undermine the climate of trust that should be cultivated and should exist, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, noted.

In his remarks to reporters today at the Presidential Palace, and asked to comment on the statement, this morning, by the visiting British Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs that Britain will not abandon its commitments toward Cyprus, the President said that “he means the interest that Britain maintains so that a solution can be found that is, as always of course, acceptable, and within the principles of international law and the European Union.

I have briefed him extensively, I repeated our readiness to start as of tomorrow, if possible, the talks for the pending issues that exist, including also the issue of Territory; and if and provided we agree on the criteria of the issue on Territory, as the agreement was before Mont Pelerin, we are ready also for a meeting of a multilateral conference in order for the negotiations to conclude.”

Asked whether the condition for the depiction of the criteria on the map, is in force, the President said that “it was always in force and it is in force.”

Asked to comment on the remarks of the President of Turkey about Cyprus, the President of Cyprus said that “such, always unacceptable, remarks do not help,” adding that “at the same time, they undermine the climate of trust that should be cultivated and should exist.”/IBNA
