The Council of Albanian Ambassadors issues an official statementThe Council of Albanian Ambassadors has issued an official statement after it gathered today to discuss the nomination of the new minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs. This Council notes that recently, the Prime Minister of Albania has made several important changes in his governing cabinet, including the dismissal of the minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ditmir Bushati and the nomination of the current vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gent Cakaj in this post. The Council notes that Rama has breached the Constitution, by not making transparent his reasons for dismissing Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati. “The Council of Albanian Ambassadors voices its concern about the fact that he has not fulfilled his constitutional obligation to make the reasons that led him to the decision to dismiss the minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs transparent. The need for such transparency stems from the specific role that the institution of the Foreign Minister has in delivering the strategic objectives of the Albanian state in this period”, says the statement that was issued a few moments ago.The Council notes that 2019 will be a busy year for our diplomacy and for Albania’s foreign policy in general. The most important of these challenges is the decision of the European Council to open negotiations talks between Albania and the EU at the end of next spring, the finalization of the maritime agreement with Greece, which has been postponed beyond any deadline, the necessary preparations to take over the OSCE’s chairmanship in 2020 and make all the necessary efforts to become temporary member of the UN Security Council for 2022, which is voted by the UN General Assembly. Facing these challenges, some of which are new for the political class, diplomacy and the state’s administration, requires foreign policy to work for a domestic development policy in response to the aspirations of Albanian society for better living standards, more democracy and the consolidation of the rule of law.The Council of Albanian Ambassadors notes that the candidate selected by Prime Minister Rama to nominate as minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Gent Cakaj, has provoked growing concern for public opinion, including the majority of this Council. This sort of unprecedented contestation for a Foreign Minister in the past 29 years of democracy, is based on the perception of the public about Mr. Cakaj’s personality as a man without the necessary professional qualities to hold such an important position. The Council of Albanian Ambassadors demands Prime Minister Rama to reevaluate the canditate in question, by upholding public and national interest.
