President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga has announced fresh elections to be held in Northern Mitrovica. These elections will be held on February 23, 2014, reports balkaneu.com.

“I announced February 23 as the date for the local government elections in the commune of Northern Mitrovica”, said the president of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga.

Monday’s decision (20.01) followed the resignation of the elected mayor of Northern Mitrvica, Krstmir Pantic.

Local government elections in Kosovo were held in Autumn. Communes and municipalities of Serb majority participated for the first time in these elections.

In the majority of municipalities and communes, the electoral process went into a run-off. Following the run-off of December 17, the elected mayor, Krstmir Pantic, resigned by saying that he doesn’t want to take his oath in front of the symbols of the state of Kosovo.

Pantic’s decision not to respect Kosovo’s state symbols was followed by the government’s reaction. Deputy prime minister, Edita Tahiri who represents Kosovo in the technical talks in Belgrade, said that respect toward Constitution is in the Brussels’ positioning.

“If one of the elected mayors of assembly councilors act in breach of the Constitution and laws of Kosovo, then the government of Kosovo will take concrete legal action to make them void”, said Tahiri.

In the north, elections were repeated due to irregularities during the electoral process, while now, they’re being repeated due to the refusal of the elected mayor to take his oath before the state of Kosovo. /ibna/
