Greece: Chios authorities arrest 3 antiquity smugglers

An inspection carried out at the port of Chios by members of the Special Missions and the Port Authority Security Office identified two transport pallets carrying eight (8) jars a while before being loaded onto a passenger ferry boat. Inside two of these jars were found a marble column and a metal shell. The sender and recipient, according to the dispatch note, concerned the same person, a 42-year old, who was identified in further inspection and was arrested his boarding on the same boat (where the pallets would be loaded on), escorted by his 18-year old nephew, who was also arrested as a co-perpetrator.

Further checks were carried out on the privately owned commercial farm truck, in which two female marble busts were found. The two nationals, according to the preliminary investigation, had purchased the marble capital and the metal shell from a 49-year old foreigner, who was then identified and arrested. From the Central Port Authority of Chios, which carries out the preliminary investigation, all the objects were confiscated, while the arrested will be brought to Chios Prosecutor.

As the state reports, the arrested persons planned to transport the smuggled objects to the main Greek port of Piraeus.../IBNA
